Welcome to She’s In Her Element.. a place where I will share my handmade home one day at a time!!
My name is Shawn-Marie, but everyone just calls me Shawn.

I am a Northerner with a Southerners Soul born and raised in Massachusetts in a small country setting within a farming community. I grew up in a gorgeous Victorian home surrounded by antiques. I’m sure that’s where my love for them both started. I am the mother of three grown children: Nicole, Christoper and Jessica. My husband Scott and I were married in August of 2020.. right before our state locked down for a pandemic. I moved into his childhood home.. which can I just say reeked of the word “BACHELOR” and outdated. I believe 2/3 of the home is pained “Jackson Brown”. I have another term for this brown but I’ll keep it to myself…. I’m also the 3rd wife to live in this home so there are for sure things that need to be completely changed.. We live on 5 acres. Part of that acreage consists of my husbands business and commercial space we lease out, not to mention a power house gym we also own on the premises. It was a dream for me to be able to quit my job and become a full time wife. A dream that I never thought would happen.. but it DID happen in October of 2021. That would be my last jaunt in the corporate world (through no fault of my own) unbeknownst to me… and then to put a cherry on top, I was asked by my two daughters to become a fulltime care taker of my four grandchildren: Ryder, Summit, Rosalie and Emery. I was more than thrilled to be able to do this and had the full support of my husband as well. I have always been an active gardener, cook, seamstress, DIY’er and a proud Keeper of the Home. I was hoping for a way to share my passions with others. As kooky as it sounded to myself, I was going to share my handmade home and all my passions and knowledge through social media and the Internet. What better platform could there be? I could possibly reach people all over the world this way and introduce them to my way of life as a full time wife and Nana and Keeper of the Home. I already have a You Tube channel If you’re interetsed in everything I’ve already shared there and want to catch yourself up, please go and check it out. Don’t forget to subscribe so I can continue to share my handmade home with you.You can find it here: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCejcXeRevbO53Vd5B8ri_JQ
“Home is the nicest word there is…”
Laura Ingalls Wilder
I grew up during the era of Little House on the Prairie and wanted nothing more than to be exactly like Caroline Ingalls. I was the epitome of a country girl… I wanted a homestead, children and a husband I could adore and serve. When I married my second husband Scott, all of my dreams came true…. finally!! NOW is my time to share with you the handmade home I am creating with my husband, the food that I prepare with heart and soul and the teachings of the old ways that I want to share and instill in my grandchildren.

Let’s face it.. the world is a scary, uncertain place right now and I feel safest and happiest in my home and on our acreage. I have a very creative soul that needs to be able to express itself on a daily basis or I’ll literally go crazy. I’m able to do that everyday by creating a gorgeous, savvy, thrifted home with my husband one day at a time and to put it bluntly, as cheaply as possible. We live in an Antique style Cape home that I am redoing one room at a time. It’s my husbands childhood home and it needs a full update at this point in time, but the bones are really good. The creative side of me couldn’t be any happier about that and because of the structure of the interior I am able to give it that farmhouse feel without it feeling out of place in my Cape style. The chickens also lend to that ambiance of our homestead, which we named The Fat Rooster Farm. My husband thinks it’s a poke towards him. We don’t even have a rooster…..
The Homestead:

I also pride myself in being a self taught gourmet cook and I adore cooking and hosting. It’s all about the details… I can totally help you throw an amazing party people will continue to talk about. I’m truly the Hostess with the Mostest and you can be too!!
I want to share all of this with you and I hope to inspire you as well to make your home a handmade home one day at a time. Being Keeper of the Home is serious business, one I value and cherish.
As far as my grandchildren are concerned I hope to instill in them a love and passion for a handmade home as well. They will be raised by the ways of the days gone by, just as I was by the great-grandparents that raised me. It’s hard being the only pair of eyes on a 7 year old, a 5 year old, a 4 year old and a 6 month old… my hands are full!!! I’ll share with you how we navigate through our days, good and bad with a schedule that’s not only fun, but wholesomely educational and more importantly, one that works. I’m pretty sure there are others out there who can appreciate my daily trial and tribulations of keeping a home and tending to 4 children while also redesigning each and every room in your home. Our homestead is a work in progress, but I have great plans to carry out including the use of a small barn that we own on the backside of our property which currently houses a bit of this and a lot of that….
Anyways… I just wanted to introduce myself and the reason for this blog… I want to share my passion and creativity with you for my family and my ‘farmhouse home’ under construction. I look forward to sharing recipes, DIY, thrifting, baking.. .. Showing you how I create a handmade home one day at a time. Thanks for stopping by. I can’t wait for our next visit!
XOXO,
Shawn
